Gries Center for Experiential and Service Learning

The Krueger Group was selected after a competitive bid process to be the design/builder of The Sally and Bob Gries Center for Experiential and Service Learning in University Circle for Hawken School.  Originally built in the early 1900’s for shipping magnate, S. Livingston Mather, the building was designed by Abram Garfield, the youngest son of President James A. Garfield.

Formerly a 10,480 square feet mansion with 11 bedrooms, the building underwent an extensive exterior and interior renovation to become an 11,410 square feet, (7) classroom extension of the lower and upper school campuses with state-of-the-art audio/visual and wi-fi capabilities.  Included in the full scope of work was the following:

  • Full modernization of all mechanical systems.
  • Installation of fire suppression sprinkler system throughout entire building and additions.
  • Construction of 3-story stair tower and extension of existing covered patio to serve as enclosed “Loggia”. Extensive efforts to match exterior finishes included harvesting and reinstallation of architectural wood elements, Dryvit finish at exterior to match existing, installation of harvested slate tile at roof of stair tower.

  • Replacement of all windows in building. Included installation of lead taped windows at main elevation to match original to building windows.
  • Construction of warming kitchen.
  • Renovation of first floor of adjacent coach house to serve as storage.

Unique interior elements:

  • Modernization and re-installation of harvested light fixtures that were original to the building.
  • Extension of existing railing systems throughout building.
  • Rehabilitation of (8) fireplace hearths and mantles. Including refurbishment of original to building screens and andirons for marble and sandstone fireplaces on first floor.
